Taught by CTBC Alumni Dr. Vickie G. Mack
This course provides a comprehensive, research‑based exploration of mental health ministry in the local church, grounded in Dr. Vickie Mack’s book Restoring the Soul. Students examine the prevalence of behavioral health disorders in the United States today and the disproportionate impact these conditions have on the African American community. Through an integrated study of psychology, sociology, public health, and theology, learners gain a clear understanding of the history, types, causes, and manifestations of mental and behavioral health conditions.
The course introduces students to traditional and contemporary treatment approaches, including exorcism, deliverance ministry, psychotherapeutic models, community‑based interventions, and psychopharmacological treatments. Special attention is given to the barriers African Americans face in accessing care, the historical relationship between the Black Church and mental‑health reform, and the unique role faith communities play in reducing stigma and supporting recovery.
Drawing from the evidence presented in Restoring the Soul, students evaluate the effectiveness of Christian intervention, pastoral care, and spiritually informed support systems. The course concludes with practical recommendations for today’s church — equipping leaders, counselors, and ministry teams to build safe, informed, and compassionate mental‑health ministries that honor both clinical wisdom and biblical truth.
